Chakra is a sanskrit term for “wheel” that refers to swirling energy centers throughout the body that receive, express and distribute life-force energy. The seven main chakras are located along the spine at major branches of the human nervous system. They connect the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual bodies. Each chakra functions at optimum level when open, aligned and in balance.
Chakras are archetypal components of consciousness and come from various ancient traditions. While the chakras have been incorporated in many spiritual practices, their existence is based not upon religion, but upon awareness of energy. Although Chakras are most known for their origin in Hinduism, the yoga philosophy and Kundalini, there are many traditions that speak of and work with energy centers: the Chinese, the Hopi, the Tibetans and even the Celts have a spiral system.
