In the Northern Hemisphere we are entering the final weeks of the Harvest Season and so begins our descent into darkness, transformation and introspection. At two points in the year, the Sun illuminates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres equally. These are known as the Equinoxes - when day and night are equal in length. This year the Autumnal Equinox, aka Mabon, is on Wednesday September 22nd and marks a day of celebration of harvest, gratitude and balance. From then on, the nights become longer, the days become shorter and colder and Earth prepares for a time of hibernation and ultimate renewal. Here we enter the time of magik making - purification, transformation and deep healing. On the Fall Equinox and Mabon we give thanks by celebrating our accomplishments, making altars and sharing harvest foods with friends as we begin our preparation for the darker seasons to come.
Mabon marks the second harvest festival of the year and is named for the Welsh god Mabon, son of Modron. Mabon is known as the “The Divine Son” and the “The Son of Light” as he is the Welsh sun god and symbolizes power, energy, sex, love and magic. Legend tells us that many believe Mabon was a real human. He was a renown hunter and marksman and was said to be part of King Arthur’s crew, riding alongside Arthur in the Battle of Badon.
Colors: Autumn and Fall colors of orange, red, yellow, brown, copper, and dark green.
Plants: Decorate your house and sacred space with autumnal flora and fauna like sunflowers, marigolds, leaves, pinecones, acorns, yarrow, rosemary, sage, mugwort, cinnamon, rosehips, and thistle.
Foods: Eat and prepare seasonal fruits and vegetables like apples, grapes, pears, pomegranates, chilis, corn, corn bread, beans, squash, pumpkins, root vegetables, wine, apple pie, apple cider.
Altar: Fill a cornucopia with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Add crystals and gemstones like amber, citrine, jasper, carnelian, tiger’s eye, agate to your alter with statues and figurines of deities like Mabon, Green Man, Demeter, Persephone, Morgan, Pomona, and Inanna. Burn incense and herbs like myrrh, sage, rosemary and mugwort. Adorn your alter with gourds, fall foliage, oak leaves, pine sprigs, wheat stalks and anything that conveys Autumn!
